i'm glad that it's over, nonetheless, cus there're some classes i can't stand any longer. but rhet's been a good one, actually it's one of my favorite! i think blogging helps a lot too, cus there's just not many chances for students to get to know each other well in a U so spread-out. again, great job everybody on your presentations!! I'm having so much fun and i thought i'd take a break and do some good ole blogging. I really slacked this semester on the blogging aspect of this class and i'm trying to make up for it. I never can really think of anything to blog about that relates to this class. I have three more days that i have to go to class and then i'm going to Lutsen with a bunch of friends to go snowboarding and party a little bit. Should be fun. I'm getting a new board and some bindings and boots for "The House" tommorow. My old board that i've had for about 6 years is getting to small and the bindings are shot. Hopefully i don't hurt myself trying anything stupid. Hopefully this cold weather doesn't hang around too much longer. I went outside today to take pictures for my photography class and the battery stopped working in my camera because it was too cold. It probably was a good thing because my hands were starting to freeze. I like the changing of the seasons here in minnesota but sometimes it gets a little to cold. Well i hope all of you have a good break, this will probably be my last blog. I'm so excited for the semester to end, I need a fresh start on some new classes. The snow is awesome though, I remember now why I love Minnesota so much. It's so pretty! I don't mind the cold at all, I love being a northern girl. Me and my roommate were up really late the other night (about 3 AM, which is late for us because we like to go to bed early) and we saw the little mini plow thing come into the lot that we can see when we look outside our window. We watched him for a really long time, we were amazed at how much snow we got and then we noticed he was wearing a santa hat! I dont' know about you guys, but I thought it was so cool! It was 3 in the morning, and freezing and tons of snow, but this guy was loving it even though he had the no fun job of cleaning it all. I love this time of year when people have so much Christmas spirit (and holiday spirit in general). Down to two nights for everyone to finish up their paper, good luck everyone! I had a reallly great semester in class with everyone, and I hope everyone has a good rest of the year.

So let's talk motivation for a minute...because I currently have completely lost all of mine!!! At the beginning of the school year I was excited to be here, excited to study a lot and excited to get good grades. Now I am feeling quite homesick and very ready to be lazy for all of winter break. I don't know if I've already blogged about this but if so i want to talk about it again...

I feel that everyone and their mom says college is the best days of our lives. All of my older friends upon returning from their first semester and/or couple of weeks of college their freshman year had nothing but positive things to say. For example, they would talk of how the parties never end and that they have met the best friends of their life. Well I don't know about too many other people but I do not feel that way.

I feel that college is confusing. It's very hard to be away from everyone I know and love. And I am NOT easily meeting the friends I will have for the rest of my life....and for sure there is not always a party to go to here in Minnesota! I just wish someone and/or society would tell us the truth! I wish we had been a little mroe prepared for the homesickness and the feeling of being lost and not having any home base to come back to. It's the wierdest feeling ever and I know it's simply part of growing up, but still I wish we could all talk a lot more openly about some things...

maybe i'll write a book someday!

Hey everyone! I too ventured into the cold cold tundra last night with some friends. I live in the superblock, so we went down by the river and hiked around and played in the snow!! It was quite rejuvinating. I felt free and so child-like....it was wonderful! My favorite part about the night was that I started eating the fresh snow and my friend Allison was really grossed out by it. So I explained to her that when we were children we did it all the time and there really is no difference now excpet for the fear that society has put in us all about not fitting in....clearly if some adult proceeded to get on all fours and lick the top layer (thats the best) of the freshly fallen snow that person would probably be looked at as a nutty one. i was so stressed out from homework that me and my roommate bridget went and frolicked in the snow for awhile. we got really cold and soaken, but made snow angels so everything was wonderful.
also, i think everyones presentations are going really really well. i hope mine goes the same. im gonna go look up website i can show you guys on friday. :)
i wonder if i'll make it to class later today... eeeek.

so today's pretty cold, don't you minnesota people agree?? before i went to nebraska, people told me it's freezing cold there, so i went prepared, with down northface coat, cashmere sweater, and all the goodies people bring to explore south pole! well, turn out, i have to spare an entire suitcase to store those "equipment" cus people were exaggerating it, it never gets down to 10 degrees there and the snow isn't bad at all. i feel extremely dumb and so i ignored every warning that minnesota winter is 10 times worse than NE and left a lot of my winter stuff in NE. but it's cold here...i know it's only gonna get worse. how am i gonna survive??? i don't know if it's just me or is there anyone who thinks that snow tends to blow right into your face no matter what direction you are facing!! that's me anyway, and it's just soooo annoying! i think it's time for me to reevaluate if a B.S. from U of M really worth the 4 years of torture.

So i really hate writing papers. I've been home pretty much all day and i haven't done very much work. I hate writing about the same stuff over and over. We've done all the research and wrote about and talked about our topics and now we have to write and talk about them again. Everything just seems really repetitive right now. I can't wait for winter break. Going snowboarding, partying with my friends, seeing my family, playing boot hockey. I sounds a lot better than going to school. I just want to get these required rhetoric classes over (writing and speech). It always seems so hard to do work at the end of semesters. I bet everybody else feels the same way.

So it's officially crunch time. For us as students at the U of M and for the Green Bay Packers in the NFL. The Packers (7-6) trail the Vikings (8-5) by one game with 3 to play. The Packers also trail both Seatle and Dallas by one game for the wild card spots in the play-offs. The Vikings currently own the tie-breaker over the Packers because of their slip-up in Detroit on Thanksgiving. so they are really currently 1 and a half games behind Minnesota. If the Vikings loose at Chicago this weekend and the Packers win, it could be a whole different story. But the Vikings seem to be rolling again after loosing their last 5 of 6. Their defense generated turnovers against Seatle and the Culpepper to Moss combination seemed as deadly as ever. I believe the best shot for the Packers to make the play-offs will be as a wild card contender. Both Seatle and Dallas seem to be on a downward spiral and have tough remaining schedules. The Packers on the other hand have a fairly easy remaining schedule on paper. But in the NFL it seems that records mean nothing, especially in December. With back to back games on the West coast against the Chargers and the Raiders and then a final home game against Denver, the schedule appears to be anything but easy. If the Packers can get their running game back on track with Ahman Green and continure to generate turnovers on defense I see no reason why they cannot win out. Denver will be the toughest task, but thankfully it is in Green Bay. If the Packers win out i believe they will definately be in the play-offs and have a good shot of advancing. If the stumble once, and end up 9-7, it may be a different story. Break out all the cliches because every game is a must win for the Packers if they want to reach the play-offs for the third consecutive year.

What a week. At least on finals week there isn't any class.
Eva, thank you for the post about the language issue. Very cool. I can't remember what we were arguing about that evening in Bailey UDS, but whatever I said then, I take it back. The issue is completely different now. Anyways.
This paper situation is odd. Not even a year ago I would have refused to write a two page paper... I just couldn't do it. And now I've got this twelve page monstrosity that demands more information, and I feel like it took so little stress or strenuous work. I lost both my research prospectus and my annotated bibliography and couldn't remember anything from either of them so I've had to do everything from scratch on this one. This is odd. I suppose it's education. Thanks Clancy.
Well, see everyone tomorrow.

I hate this one class i am taking it is LASK 1001 and it is stupid. The concept is a good one, but it is still a stupid class. The teacher will not grade your work if you don't do it right and don't do everything required or its just not what she was looking for. And that doesnt sound like a bad thing but When I do the work for that easy class and move on to doing something for a more time consuming class having to keep going back to redo her work even though it was right, it was just missing a thing or two, it is very frustrating. Anyway I still havent started writing my paper yet or at least not the body of it, I am having some serious writers block! I have the abstract, the intro, and the conclusion, but the body just doesn't want to be written down on paper. And that's a problem! Anyway back to trying to write.

ok so i just wrote a huge long post about my paper and it disappeared into cyber-wasteland. I got my earced pierced over thanksgiving break and they are really starting to itch, and I'm not supposed to take them out for at least six weeks, but it is driving me crazy. I put the disinfectant stuff on it, but that is only temporaty relief. But you know what is really wierd and I probably sound crazy for saying it, but anything clod I put on them makes it feel alot better, so I walk around with ice cubes on them, and I never wear ear muffs or nothing when I go outside cause it feels so good! I have A week and two days left and I am too happy! I dont know about you guys but I am so tired of writing about my topic. If I never hear another thing about factroy farming in my life I would be real happy. I'm to the point where I dont know what I've said and what I haven't said in which papers and I'm just sick of it. I cant wait until I'm through and it is typed, because I never want to think of it again, and plus when I'm finally through with it, and it is turned in, that will mean that there is only 4 more days until I go home. On our introductions from the annotated bibliography at the end we were supposed to put in how the set up of the paper was going to be like what evidence was going to be included, and what opposing arguments we would be addressing and what each part of the paper would consist of, do we still have to include that in our introduction? I'll put mine up here, but the parst I am talking about is the last paragraph, it is italisized. Here it is

“What is a factory farm?” is the question I must ask first. A factory farm is an industrial facility that raises hundreds and thousands of animals, in mass production, of a particular species specifically for human consumption. They are also known as confined animal feeding operations (CAFO’s) or intensive livestock operations (ILO’s). In most cases according to GRACE Factory Farm Project, “They emphasize high volume and profit with minimal regard to human health, safe food, the environment, humane treatment of animals, and the rural economy (What is factory farm”).
The fight on whether factory farms should be legal or not, has been an ongoing debate since it was first introduced in 1923, with the discovery of vitamins A and D. According to Mason and Singer, a Mrs. Wilmer Steele raised several flocks of chickens, that year indoors, throughout the winter discovering that as long as those two vitamins were in the feed, the need for sunlight and exercise were no longer essential components to the animals’ health(2). After realizing that these birds could survive and still be productive in these conditions, corporations began following in Steele’s footsteps, with the animals’ cages getting smaller and smaller and the corporations getting bigger and bigger, until the animals were/are no longer thought of as animals but as machines.
In addition to, these animals are genetically altered, which enlarge some of the animals to the point where their legs and feet, can no longer support their body weight. They are fed antibiotics which becomes a threat to public safety if the antibiotic residues are still in the bodies at the time of slaughter. If humans consume these residues they may become resistant to the antibiotics that fight bacteria and viruses, over a period of time.
Factory farms are also a strain on the environment, in regard to animal waste. No one knows exactly what to do with all of it. The cattle, pork, and poultry industry produce 130 times more waste “…than the entire human population-about five tons of waste for every man, woman, and child in America (Poisoning the Land, Air, and Water”). Environmentalist want the farmers to distribute it over larger amounts of land, so that it has no chance of contaminating the ground water, but unfortunately it is a cost that the farmers are not willing to pay. In most cases the waste is stored in lagoons, but those have a very high chance of leaking or overflowing into the groundwater, and any other nearby water I intend to thoroughly discuss the topic of factory farming as and evaluation argument. I will argue that factory farming is a practice that has more detrimental effects than benefits, and should be, if not outlawed, heavily monitored by government agencies, which are specifically designed to ensure the safety and welfare of both animals and humans. Evidence that will be included will be form well known organizations such as PETA, HFA, USDA, and GRACE, as well as well known authors who have done in depth research on the cause and effects of factory farms. I will then explain and cite information about environmental issues which are directly related to public health concerns, i.e. waste, hazardous gases, groundwater contamination, food borne illnesses, antibiotic resistance, etc. All of these issues and concerns will allow me to prove that factory farming has more negative effects than positive. Possible opposing arguments could be that, they are bred to be killed, so why should the conditions they are kept in matter? Another opposing argument may be the risk of disease and antibiotic resistance does not have a high enough percentage to be of concern. source, i.e. rivers, lakes, oceans, streams, etc.

Well ummm... I just got finished writing my abstract, finally. I couldnt think of anything to write to save my life, but any who I'm going to post it on here to see what you guys think. I feel like its missing something, like I forgot a step or something. Anyway here it is:

Factory Farming has become the more favored practice, of farmers, than the traditional farm. Farmers have made the switch from small farm to big corporation, all for the sake of money. This essay will argue that little or no regard is given to the health risk that they impose upon us, the public, the factory animals, nor the environment. I will first argue that the conditions in which the animals live in are deplorable which leads to disease and contamination, which also has a direct effect on public health, because we the consumer eat and buy these animal products. Secondly, public health is also effected when they make negative impacts on the environment. Waste, gases, and smell all are environmental hazards, that also contribute to public health. These practices are allowed to continue, because the general public is not aware, and government agencies are not successfully regulating laws that have been passed in the past.

Well i just wrote this blog thing and it would post it so I guess ill write it again. Last week, while back home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a couple of high school friends and I decided to go out to lunch after sleeping in very late and relaxing all morning. Since it was just a few of my good high school friends, I decided that this impromtu date did not call for any dressing up let alone even a shower. Well, none of us had a car so we decided to walk to this great local strip of resturaunts to grab a bite to eat. Little did we know what a funny experience was about to happen to us.

Being a very busy time of day, the place was just crowded with people. So, after we both ordered, my friend Anna and I decided to sit on the sidewalk outside (the sun was shinning and it was nice out) and wait for the rest of the group there. Now, my friend Anna has recently been trying to achieve a full head of dreadlocks and with the dreads she has the entire hippie looks of mixed up patterns, funky scarves and whatchmacallits tied around her waist and a very nice mix of old winter clothing.

As we sat there just catching up and sipping on our sodas, a man walked by and dropped a dollar into Anna's now empty soda cup that was sitting infront of her! We found it very funny that because of the way Anna looked (and maybe me!) that that would be enough to convince someone to give another person money...perhaps it is the love that is in the air with the holidays so near. But either way, the incident made us laugh and it is nice to know that those who can afford it, don't give it a second thought when it comes to helping out others. So thanks to the guy who bought us our dessert :)

This is for Will on his paper, kind of late but it might still help on your paper or maybe not. You had said that by doing this would increase the number of underground file sharing programs and they wouldn't be solving the problem at all really. I was curious to know if you use the underground one we have at the U or not.....I do and it is so awesome, I usually get movies in about 15 minutes, and songs don't require downloading time at all. I probably should'nt have posted that seeing as it's 'underground' so it might be my fault if it gets shut down....oops. anyways, if you want to know more about it i'll email you the address and stuff.

Papers due tomorrow! That seemed to come up so soon, but at least we already had so much of it done. I can't believe we're going home in two weeks. that's just such a wonderful thing, no homework for a month will be a blessing. Today I woke up bright and early to schedule classes, and as of last week I had this amazing schedule all planned out, and as they all filled up I watched in horror as my schedule fell apart. Now I have an awful no fun schedule, but oh well, things are what you make them. Im sure it will all work out. I am taking skating though, and I'm pumped for that since I miss the rink more than anything, so that will brighten my day if I'm crabby for sure. Oh yeah, a little FYI for everyone, mono is going around so watch out, you don't want to be hit with that during finals week. Don't share chapstick or drinks with anyone! It's awful for anyone who hasn't experienced it yet. Hope no one is up to late tonight trying to finish they're papers......good luck!

Registration was a rush. Wow... Don't you love it when you miss something, or something is filled up before you can get to it and the result is something much better? This college thing is too sweet. I may be three or four months late in saying that, but I love waking up at ten in the morning. Every single day.
Can't wait for next semester.
Actually being excited for classes is so novel. At least we're going to the U where we have about ten thousand choices for classes. Yeah, go U.!!!
Papers due so soon too. And to this day I still don't know what my stance on my topic is.
The time off on Wednesday was pretty nice. A great help for the paper.
I don't know what it is but it's actually very interesting just reading about all of your days or weekends. I feel like I'm peeping sometimes in an odd way into your lives but it's cool...
Yeah. See everyone in class tomorrow.

For me, this past week was filled with so many people and so much to do that unfortunately, I got a little too distracted from my school work. Now, this week I have 3 papers due!!! One of which is 25-30 pages(though I only have about 10 more to go)!!! Needless to say, I'm a little stressed and on top of that I went to the doctor this morning to find out I have a fever of 102!

Anyways, I would just like to say I am very very glad that we had the opportunity today in class to sit down and do a rough outline of our research papers. The outline this morning helped me to get more focused and gave me a great starting point. I feel a little more prepared and organized, also. It made me realize that we really have a lot of the paper done already. For example, the abstract, the inroduction, the thesis, the conclusion and the works cited page. Now comes the easy part, convincing the reader that our point of view is right and the opposition is wrong! Good luck to everyone!

The Packers like digging themselves in holes it seems this year. They have had so many close games that have been fumbled away or have been lost by missed opportunities. Now they are in a serious hole and the playoffs seem pretty doubtful. They need to win their final 4 games and get some help. The lose to the Lions on Thanksgiving was the biggest and most humiliating lose of the year, it was also their poorest performance of the year. The Vikings now own the tiebreaker and are a game up. The surging Packers didn't seem like they were prepared agaisnt the Lions. A mix of over confidence and lack of preparation and heart as well as turnovers were the recipe for disaster. This season has been an emotional roller coaster. If the Packers miss the playoffs they will have only themselves to blame and it will be a sorry waste of talent and opportunity for a superbowl season. I believe they can win out, but its going to take every players heart and soul and constant focus and good preparation for each game of the season. They also might need the old Lambeau gods of luck on their side.

Are we really back at school already? This weekend went by so fast, but now I'm really excited for Christmas. Only 3 weeks left! And somehow I got lucky enough to have a final on Friday morning, and my roommate (who is also my ride home) is done on Wednesday so she's heading out and leaving me all alone! I guess I'll have to have my parents come get me. It's so weird that our papers are already going to be due, but it helps so much that we did all of that other stuff like the prospectus and the bibliography first. I thought it'd just be a huge pain, but I really do appreciate it now. Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving.....see you all tomorrow afternoon.

my weekend was great~~~finally got a chance to catch some breath. this thanksgiving was really different for me, cus i didn't spend it with a family (a family--cus i don't have any family here) like the last two years, instead i had potluck party with a whole bunch of people from church. most of us are foreign students that got stuck in here with the ice and gloom...besides, thanksgiving is not that important, if ever acknowledged, in countries other than the usa. so, it was kinda fun! i was soooo shocked by the fact that people would actually leave home at 5 a.m. to go shopping on the day after thanksgiving!!craziness! of course i didn't go with the flow, holidays are all about sleeping-in's^.^ well, here i am back in my dorm room again, trying to make myself do school-related stuff, it's hard....and i guess blogging counts for some too, right, clancy!? i'll see you all tmr.

well- happy thanksgiving everyone! hope everyone had lots of good food and fun. im about to go to the airport to go to vegas and hopefully thatll be fun, however i do have this eminent feeling of doom since i have two HUGE exams plus two papers due next week as well as an exam the week after adn the final paper for this class. then onto finals week. oh yippee!!! i wish i could skip over the next three weeks and be done with it but alas, i cant so i guess ill seal with it. so anyhow, on wednesday my chihuahua ran for the first time. after a few minutes she started to limp a little again but she is doing sooooo much better. i just cant believe how much she has improved. well, gotta plane to catch so ill see ya'll on monday. have a great weekend.

The Green Bay Packers are keeping pace. They beat the 49ers this sunday and continue to be one game back off the division leading Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings barely escaped sunday with a victory against the Lions. The Vikings snapped a 4 game loosing streak and added to Detroits now 22 consecutive road loss streak, which is one game short of the all-time record for continous road losses. The Packers continue to dominate teams with the run. The lead the league in rushing per game and totalled 243 yards on the groung sunday against the 49ers, who had the 4th best run defense in football. The Packers seem to be rolling and Brett Favre's broken thumb is getting healthier every day. The defense seems to be improving every game as well. They had their best outing of the season sunday and pretty much shutdown Tim Rattay(49ers quaterback) who held and impressive 119 quaterback rating coming into the game. Things are going well for the Packers of late and if they can continue to play well they sould make the playoffs. They have a much easier schedule on paper than Minnesota for the remainder of the season. What seemed to be a bleak season filled with close heartbreaking losses now seems to have much promise. Only time will tell but this could be the year of the PACK.

is anyone feeling that finals crunch already? i am, i need to shape up in my classes, not that i am doing bad or anything, i just need to put everything in complete focus and not distract myself with anything else, i am trying to do so good in all of my classes but its kin da hard with this big of a workload and having no time to do anything because i am always either working or on the bus getting home and by the time i get home i am too tired to even get up to do my hw, but i am training myself to do good, anyone have any tips to get motivated? or better yet, does anyone have any tips for hmmmm, lets see, sociology 1101 or microeconomics 1101? i am doing good in my econ class bu the tests in my soc class are really killing me i think i need some study tips for tests, leave a coment :)

thanksgiving break is always interesting for my family, we go up to our cabin, just our family so it isn't like all the relatives come or anything, but we all go up to our fourty acres that we own, it is in this small town called mission, its kinda like a half hour past brainerd. We get up there and it is in this little town which has only a gas station and a resuraunt in it. It is a very heavily wooded area and we go up there a lot to do some snowmobiling and what not. Now with being in the middle of nowhere we have a moble home that our neighbors who live two miles away owned up there we have nobody around for miles and its only us and the wilderness. There is no electricity and no running water, so we bring up our generator and fire up the wooden stove to warm the place up. Now, the turkey is the difficult part up there, my mom actually makes it on the grill and it is horrible! It is totally black and the dryest turkey i have ever tasted, but its the thought and the spirit of thanksgiving that counts. right?

Is everyone else as pumped as I am for Thanksgiving break? I can't even wait, it's all I've been thinking about, and I'm not doing a bit of homework while I'm home. It's so weird to think that we're going to come back for a week of classes and then a week of finals and we get a whole month off. I love how it always works out so nicely that the flu decides to go around right when everyone is about to go on break and we're trying to finish up projects. My dorm hall is lucky enough to be experiencing that right now, and there's no escaping any type of illness once someone catches it in the dorms. So I either avoid the dorms completely, or never leave my room. I doubt either will work out to well. Anyways....hope everyone's research paper is coming along well.

well, heres another one.
the most suprising thing to me about learning the philosophy of architecture was that some of these architects were heavily influenced by composers, painters, poets, and writers. The authors of the module define an abstract as follows:

Abstracts, like all summaries, cover the main points of a piece of writing. Unlike executive summaries written for non-specialist audiences, abstracts use the same level of technical language and expertise found in the article itself. And unlike general summaries which can be adapted in many ways to meet various readers' and writers' needs, abstracts are typically 150 to 250 words and follow set patterns.

A principle of abstracts that's particularly important for you to learn in this class is the difference between a descriptive abstract and an informative abstract. You will be writing an informative abstract of your research paper. Before you start drafting your abstract, learn about the key points involved in composing abstracts and examine both methods for writing abstracts. The second one (the "backwards outline") will be a very useful exercise for you to complete when writing your research paper.

ok. so its getting close to the end of the semester adn i am just panicking. theres is way too much to do and not enough time to do it in. but i guess ill make it through it. i had my last calc quiz yesterday, and granted ill be happy if i get 8/20 cause i just dont get this material i9 wont have to take anymore quizes. just an exam and the final. does anyone else think its stupid that a lot of classes have an exam in the last week of class adn then a final the next week. ohwell i guess i cant complain too much... i only have finals in two of my four classes. so tryign to figure out my schedule for next semester is just evil. none of my classes fit at all into a reasonably convenient schedule... its gotta be a conspiracy. on the plus note... i can justify only working weekends next semester... on the downside, i cant afford to only work weekends. but itll all work out. so im pretty excited about going to vegas. i dont know exactly what we are planning to go do and see but itll be fun. yeah so ive just been rambling here so ill stop now.

Yeaaa!! Everyone's topics are very interesting. I really liked being challenged and confronted with the contrary to my viewpoint. It was very beneficial. Thanks everyone. Iggy, your blog beneath is neat!
Yeah...
I'm really not sure what time we should be beginning to write our final paper. I suppose now would be best, but procrastination is a difficult thing to conquer. I'm still not even sure which side of my argument I support anymore. I don't know if that's happened to anyone else, but after doing research, I'm starting to have my second thoughts.
Well, at least tomorrow is Friday. Going to see two concerts this weekend. Very excited.
And the semester is ending shortly... It's been a good class... Every group had diffrent rules. We had no right to talk durring the game , so we had to use gestures. After each game , the person that was the winner went to the group with the higer number ( for example if you are in group 1 you go to group2), and the person that lose , goes to the lower number group.
What happend is that evry person that was coming in your group ,had differnt rules for the game , and with no right to talk was supper frusturating ,to play with someone that doesn't know your rules. It was very funny because the people got very confused and didn't know , waht was the rigth way to play.
So what was the point...Basicaly the teacher wanted to show us how difficutl is to go to differnt coutry with already set up rules. You know diffrent one, and they do not work in the other country. He wanted to show us that every rule was right ,and it depends on were are you going and without knowing the language can be very difficult.
He told us that on the end of the class , so was very interesting to see why he did it!

i think our discussion time today totally revealed the fun and frustration of doing a research. when i first started, i thought i have a clear idea of the topic and my stand in it, but as i moved onto the various sources, my theory or thesis turned out to be not necessary an induction to the reality. i don't want to change my mind, because it's my reasoning, my own insight, why do i have to argue with myself. and then i need to remind myself i am actually doing a research paper, not a creative expressive piece... the bottom line is, i am learning a lot from this project and as well from you guys's too.

Hey everyone....I think I may have stomped on a few peoples toes today in class, which wasn't my intention, so I want to explain my topic a little more. First off, for my paper I was focusing more on illegal immigrants. It is estimated that there are 4 million living in the US right now. That means that for every 1 person the border control stops, about 3 get by which is a lot. In 1996 there was an Immigration Act to take people into the country based on skills that would benefit the economy such as students and people that already have degrees. Every year this number is cut because we have such an overload of illegal people living here, and our country can only handle so many people. When people come here illegally, they get very low paying jobs and work in harsh conditions. They also come over here in groups, and form little 'communities' where they feel comfortable with eachother. Since they are illegal aliens, they obviously do not have the option to get an education or a good job, and therefore do not learn to speak English or benefit our country in any way. These are the people that I feel are abusing our country and taking advantage of it. I didn't mean ALL immigrants. And it's these people that are preventing others who do apply for visas from getting into the country. I am not a racist person and do not feel that people should not be allowed here, but I do feel that if they live here they need to know a little bit about the country and try to represent what it stands for. So many countries rip America apart because we are 'money hungry' and 'greedy' people, and it's these same people that only have terrible things to say about our country that are trying to come here to make a living. They also do not feel that we should go into other countries to help them when they are in trouble, and then if we don't we're selfish. It seems no matter what no one really likes America, yet everyone still tries to get in here, and America still takes them (many countries don't, I know Australia is pretty tight on who they let in). I'd say that's a pretty darn good country and people need to respect that a little more and not just come here to take advantage of it (Again, aiming that mostly towards illegal aliens). Because we have such a diversity here, school's are also cutting American history from the curriculum because there are so many negative things in it, and with the many different nationalities here, they don't feel it's right to be teaching about our history. Which I feel is totally wrong, just because there are millions of people here that aren't native born, America does not have to give up everything it's been through. If people are coming here to live the rest of their lives, they're going to be AMERICAN! We shouldn't have to cut things out of the curriculum just to please the many different peoples coming here. It seems everything today has to be 'politically correct' and it's going overboard. Our national anthem should still be something everyone knows, as well as the pledge of allegiance, and our national holidays should still be recognized. Christmas time is so beautiful in America, with all the decorations and the happiness, I fear that someday my children won't see that because not everyone is christian so it can't be openly celebrated in public. It's the direction our country is headed and that's what I'm against. Ok....I hope that's better for some people. Again, I apologize......and if anyone has comments, please leave some for me, I would love more opposing/supporting arguments.

The Pack is deninitely back, in the playoff race that is. This weekends win over the defending superbowl champion Buccaneers was huge and now puts Green Bay one game behind Minnesota who lost for the fourth consecutive week. Daunte Culpepper seems to be back to his old self comitting 5 turnovers in their game against the Raiders. That's good news for all the Packer fans and bad news for the Vikings. The Packers have a very favorable schedule for the remaining of the season, but no game is easy in the NFL. If we keep getting the dominating performances shown by out offensive line and Ahman green with a healing Brett Favre we could be the team to reckon with in the NFC. The Eagles seem to have things rolling as well and are probably the other top team in the NFC. Darren Sharper predicted Green Bay to face Kansas City in the Super Bowl. Hopefully the Packers can keep focused and play good enough to make that happen.

hey everyone, finally friday again, when will the whole ycle end, you are always wishing it was friday, it finally comes and then the next week you do the same thing over with. i don't know abou teveryone else, but i am looking forward to our long winter breaks, does anyone know exacly when all of the breaks for the u of m are? i am completely clueless on when they are and it would be a nice thing to look forward to.

thank god for the architectural library and its abundance of books on frank lloyd wright. im pretty happy i didnt have to go to the regular library, that thing confuses me.
i found that many authors feel the same way i do about organic, or sensual architecture. that helps so much with my topic. i found A LOT of information.
i think explaining my topic is gonna be pretty hard today, its clear in my head what my paper is gonna be on, i just have to try and explain it to someone who has no idea what im doing my topic on.

In other news, my parents are coming to visit me on saturday, which should be wonderful because i havent seen them in 2 months. it should be nice because theyre gonna buy me some new clothes, and dinner. and then thanksgiving is in 2 weeks! yay turkey!!

I finally finished my annotated bibliography!!! I just gave a speech about Mary Fisher and her speech "A Whisper of AIDS". I had to talk about the effeciveness of her speech and all the rhetorical strategies she used. It was fun, not. I really don't have anything else to write about so i guess i'll talk about the Packers again. They lost monday night to the resurging Eagles. The Packers had 6 fumbles and one interception compared to no fumble and no interceptions by the Eagles. It was a game of missed opportunities and mistakes. Ahman Green had a career day. He brok a Packers and an individual record with 192 yards rushing but 2 fumbles cost the Pack. We dominated the game and were up in the fourth quarter despite the turnovers, but with 23 seconds left, McNaab found Todd Pinkston in the inzone. The Eagles went after starting conerback Al Harris's replacement Bao Jue, who also gave 2 huge plays that lead to a defeat by the Cheifs. The Packers are 4-5, their worst start since 2000, and are 2 games back behind the Vikings. They play the Superbowl defending champs this weekend who are also 4-5. The loser of this game will be pretty much out of the playoff picture so it is a must win. It should be a great game, it is a good rivalry and Farve and Sapp shoud go at it a few times. If we can hold on to the ball and make some plays we should win. Tampa has some key injuries and their denene doesn't appear to be as dominant as it was last year. Last year these teams met, and they were both 8-2 and in their respective division lead, what a difference a year makes.

so yeah- im ready for this semeser to be over. i need a break, it seems as soon as i get through one major assignment there's three more waiting and as much as i want the semester to be done i dont have enough time to finish everything before the end of it. grrrrrr!!!!! i cant wait until thanksgiving at least. im going to vegas for my friends wedding and itll be crazy because ive got way too much homework adn way to many tests adn way to many papers due the week after but i dont care... im gonna do as much as i can before the trip and not worry about anything until i get back. the only other thing that sucks is im broke so i wont be able to do half the stuff i wanna do there but oh well. itll still be fun. so i think class today will be pretty interesting. im interested in seeing what everyone has to say about my topic adn the other topics discussed. good luck to those of you who present today.

It has finally arrived!!! Try to stay out of trouble!

It's Friday!!! I've been waiting for this day all week. School was not fun at all this week....too much homework and too many midterms. I dont' understand though how I just had all my midterms this week, and now I have them all over again next week. I think the teachers here need to have a little bit of sympathy for us! I agree with Sarah and Jordan...I liked our class discussions, it made things more interesting for the day. It's hard to sit in class all day and just listen to lecture, after lecture, after lecture....not fun at all. Anyways...I'm going home again this weekend. Kinda sad, I go home a lot, but I just love it up there. I was going to stay down here until Thanksgiving, but then my sister called and said it was 'Skate with the Bulldogs' this weekend (when it's open ice and you can skate with UMD's hockey team and just hang out with the guys) and I love that more than anything because my cousin plays for UMD so I like going to see him and his teammates and hanging out with them. It's nice to get out of the dorms too, I mean as fun as it is down here, there's no denying that dorms just suck. Anyways....have a great weekend everyone.

ok so class was kinda fun today... i liked hearing about the topics discussed... esp the marriage incentive plan. i dont watch the news or read the paper because its too depressing and i dont need anymore depressignthings in my life adn most of the news is BS and not necessary for a concientious person awareness of the world. i think most of it just causes fear and paranoia (sp?). i had never heard of the marriage incentive plan before and it was neat to hear about it. on a side note: it was my chihuahua's second birthday yesterday and im soooo happy she could enjoy it. shes able to walk almost completely normal when she walks slow. unfortunately she acts like shes all well adn tries to run and jump when shes not strong enough for that adn her left front leg isnt completely normal yet so she falls and trips. we just need to watch her and try not to let her overexert herself. i got her some toys adn "freeze-dried ice cream for dogs." she was asleep when i got off of work so i didnt get to see her eat it today but i heard she really liked it. well see ya'll friday.

Hey Jordan! I agree that the class showed a lot more interest today than usual. I think it was great that people asked questions and got involved. On the idea of so many controversial topics being discussed, I think it's a really cool thing that we're in a setting where there are educated people that we can have such interesting conversation and debate. It would be really cool to know the opinion of the people in class that are against some of the things we said today in class...it might actually really help our papers, too!! So if anyone wants to share some oppossing arguments with me on Bush, Republicans, or the Marriage Incentive Plan, I'd love it!!! Have a great night everyone! :)

I thought it was pretty interesting to hear some of the topics people are doing for their research papers today in class. I also thought that the class was pretty interested as a whole and voiced their opinions on the subjects. I think there are a lot of controversial topics being researched and not every one totally agrees. Its hard to please everyone but you have to voice your opinions. This class is almost over, pretty much one more assignment and were done. I can't wait for winter break. Getting away from school, homework, seeing my friends, going snowboarding, and partying a little bit. It should be fun. Well, that's all i have to say about that. I just grew up with college football: the SEC Championship, the Alabama-Auburn rivalry, etc., which reminds me...here is a little email forward I got years ago and saved. Hope you like it:

WOMEN'S ACCESSORIES North: Chapstick in back pocket and a $20 bill
in the front pocket. South: Louis Vuitton duffel with two lipsticks,
water-proof mascara, and a fifth of bourbon. Money not necessary - that's what dates are for.

STADIUM SIZE North: College football stadiums hold 20,000 people
South: High School football stadiums hold
20,000 people.

FATHERS North: Expect their daughters to understand Sylvia Plath
South: Expect their daughters to understand pass interference.

ATTIRE North: Male and female alike: wooly sweater or sweatshirt
and jeans. South: Male - pressed khakis, oxford shirt, cap with
frat logo. Female - ankle-length skirt, coordinated cardigan, flat riding boots.

ALUMNI North: Take prospects on sailing trips before they join the
law firm. South: Take prospects on fishing trip so they don't leave
for NFL before their senior year.

CAMPUS DECOR North: Statues of founding fathers. South: Statues of Heisman Trophy winners.

HOMECOMING QUEEN North: Also a physics major. South: Also Miss USA

HEROES North: Mario Cuomo South: Paul "Bear" Bryant

GETTING TICKETS North: 5 days before the game you walk into the
ticket office on campus and purchase tickets. South: 5 months before
the game walk into the ticket office on campus and put name on waiting list for tickets.

FRIDAY CLASSES AFTER A THURSDAY NIGHT GAME North: Students and teacher
are not sure if they are going to the game, because they have classes
on Friday. South: Teachers cancel Friday classes because they don't
want to see the few hungover students that might actually make it to class.

PARKING North: An hour before game time the University opens the
campus for game parking. South: RV's sporting their school flags
begin arriving on Wednesday for the weekend festivities. The really faithful arrive on Tuesday.

GAME DAY North: A few students party in the dorm and watch ESPN
on TV. South: Every student wakes up, has a beer for breakfast
and rushes over to where ESPN is broadcasting "Game Day Live" to
get on camera and wave to the idiots up North who wonder why "Game
Day Live" is never broadcast from their campus.

TAILGATING North: Raw meat on a grill, beer with lime in it, listening
to local radio station with truck tailgate down. When
you find it, you walk right in. South: When you're near it, you'll
hear it. On game day it becomes the state's third largest city.

CONCESSIONS North: Drinks served in a paper cup, filled to the top
with soda. South: Drinks served in a plastic cup with the home
team's mascot on it. Filled less than halfway with soda, to ensure enough room for bourbon.

WHEN NATIONAL ANTHEM IS PLAYED North: Stands are less than half
full, and less than half of them stand up. South: 100,000 fans,
all standing, sing along in perfect
3-part harmony.

THE SMELL IN THE AIR AFTER THE FIRST SCORE North: Nothing changes.
South: Fireworks, with a touch of bourbon.

COMMENTARY (MALE) North: "Nice play." South: "Dammit, you slow sumbitch
- tackle him and break his legs ! !"

COMMENTARY (FEMALE) North: "My, this certainly is a violent sport."
South: "Dammit, you slow sumbitch - tackle him and break his legs ! !"

ANNOUNCERS North: Neutral and paid. South: Announcer harmonizes
with the crowd in the fight song, with a tear in his eye because he is so proud of his team.

AFTER THE GAME North: The stadium is empty way before the game ends.
South: Another rack of ribs goes on the smoker. While somebody
goes to the nearest package store for more bourbon, planning begins for next week's game.

The Green Bay Packers(4-4) face off with the Eagle(5-3) tonight on Monday Night Football. These two teams are competing for first place in their divisions and wild card spots in the NFC. This game is very important for both teams and will probably have playoff implications down the road. With a win the Packers will be only one game behind the division leading Minnesota Vikings(6-3) who lost their third consecutive game to the San Diego (Super) Charges this weekend who employed a 41-year old quaterback and racked up 42 points and almost 500 yard of total offense. The Vikings were 4 games up on the Packers three weeks ago but now the momentum seems to be in the Packer's favor and the Vikings seem to be collapsing. Hopefully the Packers will make the playoffs for the third straigt year and maybe win some games. If they do get to the playoffs they should have fairly good chances of winning the NFC which seems to be a weaker conference compared to the AFC. Only time will tell, the Packers have to take it one game at a time, and that means winning tonight. The play Tampa Bay next week and the San Fransico the following week. Both teams are in the NFC and fighting for wild card spots. This game tonight and the next two are very important and almost must wins if the packers want to make it to the playoffs. Hopefully the Vikings will continue their slid and make it easier on the PACK.

I wanna see bowling for columbine :( so many people have told me about it. anyway, i changed and went back out to party until 7 in the morning. that was the last time that i have done something social. i have been so busy with work and school work, that i haven't had time for anything. sad day for me :(.

has anyone gotten the bug? it made me really sick nd i am still sick today, i messed class on monday b/c i had the bug it is horrible, it made me feel like crap and i couldn't even stay for any of my other classes i really wanted to come to class too, i had a ride set up and everything so yeah; just giving a warning to rush to boynton and get your flu shot!

hey everyone, i don't have my annotation today because i have a crappy computer at home. i came down here last nite for on the spot admissions for pseo students and i got accepted to cla, butthen i had to go to my econ midterm review session from 6 to 9 so then i was planning to go home and finish up my annotated bibliography but m dad called be and told me that it would be easier for me to stay down here tonite, but hey my paper is at home and i tried to get my sister to attach and send to me so i could bring it today but our internet just happened to be down so i don't have anything today

this morning i skipped my "beloved" biol lab to finish up the annotated bibliography, and yea, i am procrastinating...i was sitting on my bed staring at the monitor, not knowing what to write about, and kept checking the time. so i was there, wasting my time dozing off and telling myself that i am real busy! Im learning so much, and i hope with my paper i'll get you guys to learn a bunch too. :) I think Architecture in general is so interesting, my mom even commented that when i was little id comment on buildings. type='text'>

i went and saw the new Matrix movie last night, i had to pay $7.50, ridicuolous. It was a pretty good movie though, but i don't think either the 2nd or the third one compares with the first. The action was awesome and there were a lot of fight scenes and good effects. A little comedy, too many love scenes, a lot of action. There seems to be a lot about religion going on in these movies. It seems like they mix together a lot of religions and different views on life into the story. I'd say go see the movie but don't have too high of expectations. They say they're not going to make any more sequels but they leave it open by the way they end the movie. I bet they will have more movies out in 5 years.

Ever hear the phrase "Mean People Suck"...because it is sooo incredibly true. (I am trying really hard not to swear right now) This morning was a great morning for me. I woke up and was incredibly motivated to hit the gym and eat a healthy breakfast. Exercise is a great stress relief and eating well makes me feel better and have more energy. So I returned to my room, got ready to head off to class on the West Bank and threw on all my warm clothes. Excited about the exercise I decided I would fight the cold and bike over the bridge rather than bus it.
I go outside, walk to the bike rack, and find a really nice suprise (again trying not to swear!!!) Someone decided my bike didn't look good the way it was and decided to completly shred my very comfortable seat into pieces, seriously right down to the bare insides of the seat. This really upset me of course, but I figured I could just sit on it uncomfotably. So I continue to unlock it, and pull it away from the rack when I realized the the MEAN person who did this also thought it would be really really funny to mess with the chain and get the back thingy that the chain is supported by stuck in the spoke of my back wheel. Upon realizing that my bike is now completely unusable I called my mom and cried...after all, it was her bike.
MEAN PEOPLE SUCK!

The month of Novemeber always brings a smile to my face. The first reason is Thanksgiving of course. The second reason is beacause I am one month closer to my birthday. But the main focus is Thanksgiving. I can't wait to get back home and and eat until I can't eat anymore. Being around my family and a lot of delicious food always seems to make me feel better if Im in a bad mood. The month of November is also a mental reminder that I break away from school is approaching soon. And with all these midterms and papers due I could really use a break away from this place. But I would just like to say I hope everyone had a pretty good week. And I hope you have a great weekend!!

An interesting reading in chapter twelve indeed. I'm not defending either group when I say this: I wonder if the two shooters were outcasts for a reason, beyond how they looked, and what they listened to. Maybe they were outcasts because something about them seemed to imply that they would do something like that? I do agree that the upper, or more popular cliques have much more power in a school system and that if more positive attention was payed to the "outcast group" maybe these things wouldn't happen. Maybe those popular cliques had the potential to be just as violent as the shooters, though since they were on the top had no reason to. Maybe there are too many maybes and not enough:"let's try to establish an environment where power is not important. What if it is just: This is what happens because humans are violent and have been taught to kill one another for power. I hope not. But... Maybe.

What did everyone else think of that essay in chapter 12 about the columbine shooting? Advocates for youth is dedicated to creating programs and advocating for policies that help young people make informed and responsible decisions about their reproductive and sexual health. Advocates provide information, training, and strategic assistance to youth-serving organizations, policy makers, youth activists, and the media in the United States and the developing world. The three main principles Advocates aims to provide are your rights; Youth have rights to accurate and complete sexual health information, confidential reproductive and sexual health services, and a secure stake in the future. Your Respect, Youth deserve respect. Today, young people are largely perceived as part of the problem. Valuing young people means they are part of the solution and are included in developing programs and policies that affect their well-being, and responsibility, Society has the responsibility to provide young people with the tools they need to safeguard their sexual health, and young people have the responsibility to protect themselves from too-early childbearing and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV.
This source was extremely credible, and valuable because it provided statistical information that was necessary to show real world proof of what I am proposing in my research paper and Advocates is a website dedicated to providing information to troubled teenagers and helping them out with problems.

No problem Sara!!! My 'neighbors' are pretty far away, and it's really quiet. I've always loved sleeping like that, crickets in the summer, peaceful, really quiet. No cars, no horns, no people. And then I came here, and it's loud all the time. Sirens all night, people running around the halls. I couldn't sleep for the first week I was here! I was terrified I would be stolen out of my bed or something horrible would happen. So while I was at home, my family was gone to my brother's football game (I didn't go since I wasn't feeling well) and I went to go bed, and I honestly didn't sleep at all. I was terrified. I imagined all of these creepy woods creatures coming to my window, or someone breaking into my house and cutting my phone lines and I'd have nowhere to run since it's in the middle of nowhere. And I've never ever been scared of something like that. I've gotten so used to the noise and activity here, and the comfort of there always being people really close by. I was very scared of the city when I first got here, all the crime that you hear about, but I for some reason feel safer here? the doctors said she probably just fell asleep adn didnt wake up so they are thinking it was painless and just about the best way to go if you've gotta go but its still kinda hard. it's gonna be wierd not seeing her sweep her sidewalk and get her mail everyday. its gonna be weird not to talk to her when i take the dog for a walk. but i guess thats life.

ok so about the amniocentesis thing... i have to say that i am pro choice but i do not think that abortion should be used as a method of birht control for idiots who are too stupid to use contraceptives or abstinence and i dont think it should be used to decide who is worthy of life. if people decide to abort or carry out a pregnancy because a fetus has a chance (or a definite diagnosis) of genetic imperfections, it is that much closer to people trying to have "designer babies." also, a few of the sources im using have told abotu women or couples who decide to abort a healthy baby because it was the "wrong" gender. personally i dont think that is right and if people choose who has the right to live and who doesnt, it will be harmful to society as a whole and hurt people's tolerance for others. on top of the whole problem with aborting babies (which the woman has specifically and intentionally become pregnant with) based on gender or genetic "imperfections," there is the question of the possible damage done to the fetus during the amniocentesis procedure and the amount of stress that the pregnant women endure while deciding to have amniocentesis and awaiting its results. ok im rambling and probably not making sense but if anyone has questions about amnio or my paper or if ya'll have opinions or anything, let me know.

Brett Favre started his 198th (NFL record for QB) consective game last night agaisnt the Minnesota Vikings and came out victorious. Favre and the Pack overcame the dreaded metrodome and it fans while Brett Favre played with a broken thumb. The Packers rushed for 261 yards and Favre threw for three touchdowns. This win put Favre at 119 total wins, he is tied for fourth all-time, and put Green Bay back in the playoff hunt. The Vikings are coming off two consecutive losses at home and cannot seem to stop anybody defensively. Favre ups his record to an amazing 8-2 coming of serious injuries. Last year he tore his medial-collateral ligament in his knee and came back to win the next game.(Wereing a brace, this game he wore a splint on his throwing hand) Favre is 3rd all time with 331 touchdown passes. In todays Star Tribune Sports section Former Vikings coach Jerry Burns said, "Favre is playing with a broken thumb and this is the best i have seen him, ever. Favre is the person who won this game for the Packers. He was the spark out there. No doubt he is the best quaterback playing the game today. I'm not sure he isn't the best ever to play in the NFL." Favre said ever play hurt like hell but he played through it. Favre plans to play at least a couple more years and probably more knowing him, he is on pace to break the all time record of touchdown passes and career wins in 4 or so years, and is yet to miss a game since becoming the starting quaterback for the Green Bay Packers in 1991. He is the only 3-time MVP and has been second in voting many times including last year. His streak of consecutive games, his MVPs, his super bowl win, and his grit put him among the greates if not the greates to ever play the game. Hopefully he'll keep adding to his legacy.
